Project Summary
Design for Extreme Affordability 2024 Cohort
Jan-Jun 2024
As part of the "Design for Extreme Affordability" class at Stanford, I worked as a design consultant on the Conexiones Florescientes "ConFlores" project. ConFlores aimed to support artisans in the Barbilla Nairi Awari zone of Costa Rica by connecting their handcrafted products with tourists hiking the El Camino trail. The primary challenge was to overcome limited transportation and infrastructure issues that prevented artisans from reaching tourists and achieving stable incomes.
I facilitated project management, conducted market research, and optimized supply chain processes. I collaborated with local communities, stakeholders, and process managers to ensure the effective implementation of the project.
Design Process
We engaged in extensive field research and collaboration with both indigenous and non-indigenous artisans. Through iterative design thinking methodologies, we developed a streamlined process where artisanal items were collected, assembled into pouches, and distributed to tourists by tour guides.
ConFlores provided a structured and sustainable way for artisans to sell their products to tourists. This process involved a dedicated system of process managers who coordinated with artisans and tour guides to ensure the timely production and distribution of artisanal items.
Impact
The project resulted in stable and increased income for the artisans, a deeper connection between tourists and the local community, and enhanced economic and cultural vitality in the Barbilla Nairi Awari zone. The initiative empowered local artisans, promoting cultural heritage and fostering sustainable economic development.
